That's true enough. I think it gives you a different kind of information. It 
tells you that these artists have a strong reputation among the folks 
participating in the awards decision-making process (and what "strong 
reputation" means will vary among the participants). 

But I think that because presenters have to make booking decisions wherein 
the ability to draw audience is a big part of the bottom line, a measure of 
one's ability to create that "strong reputation" out in the big wide world is 
a useful sort of barometer.

But that's all it is. One's strong reputation may be based on great artisitc 
skill or promotional skill or (probably) some of both. The award is just an 
indicator of some strength -- and the rest of the world is invited to 
investigate the "at what?" question.
