Then there is our left coast http://www.kpig.com, which is
not strictly folk, but plays a fair amount of folk mixed in
with other similar genres, including a regular sunday night
bluegrass show, and live music in the studio each sunday
morning. According to recent Arbitron ratings, this little
local station here has become the #1 internet radio station
in terms of total listeners. KPIG is now netcasting in
low bandwidth mono ReadAudio format, decent quality mid speed
Microsoft Streaming stereo format, and most recently in
icecast/shoutcast 128kbit/sec MP3 format as an experiment (this
requires DSL or cable modems, and the server software is a bit
flakey still so not infrequent outages have marred what otherwise
is a better-than-FM sound).
