Dear friends,

Some of you know that I've been in Bosnia for several months now working for
the Army on a base near Tuzla. Originally I'd been told that I'd be the
entertainment coordinator, and I had great hopes to try to get some people
from the contemporary acoustic circuit in the US over here to play. As it
turns out, I'm handling tours and publicity instead.

Be that as it may, I received an e-mail from David LaMotte a couple of
months ago saying that he was going to be in Sarajevo in October and were we
interested in having him perform. Through several e-mails between David and
others here, we managed to make it happen.

David performed here last Saturday night to a most appreciative crowd. I
know it was an unusual setting for him -- after all, just about everybody in
the room was dressed in camoflauge uniforms and armed, too. It was a good
evening on many levels -- for me, just to see a familiar face from home was
great, not to mention getting to see David perform a lot of songs from his
new album that I hadn't heard before. The people who were in the audience
enjoyed talking to David afterwards, and they've been coming up to me all
week saying how great it was to hear David AND to have some sort of
entertainment other than a cover band for a change. He really touched people
with his songs. And the one-star general who caught part of the show
compared his voice and style to "Sweet Baby James" and was wowed by the
guitar solo.

I had the pleasure of driving into Sarajevo to pick David up and then
returning him the day after the show. It was a treat to catch up on what
he's been doing as well as what some mutual acquaintances over there have
been up to. In short, I enjoyed visiting with David and experiencing a
little touch of home through the concert.

If you haven't heard his new album, you'll want to. The lyrics/tune from one
of his songs keeps rolling around in my head. . . "There's no time like the
present. . . There's no present like time."

Alive and well in Bosnia,
Maryl Neff
