The annual Philadelphia Folksong Society Thanksgiving weekend party/jam was
held last Friday at the Cohen/Tankle home, and a highlight for me was Ken
Ulansey on soprano sax playing Sentimental Mood, backed by Pete Kennedy.
The sax was sweet, slow, and light, and the guitar playing was even lighter,
showing that Pete knows not only great licks and guitar virtuosity, but he
also knows when to lay low and hold back. Across the hall, a bit earlier,
WXPN's Gene Shay, hosting a singer/songwriter room, invited Pete and Maura
Kennedy to do a few songs and say a few words to a spillover crowd of maybe
30 or so. "Across the Great Divide" - supurb! Wendy Fuhr on fiddle, Erik
Balkey (I hope I spelled that right), Ray Naylor, a few travelling musicians
(Cheryl/NY, Eliot/Baltimore) and others made for a great roomful of music.
