A very Happy New Year to all of you.  Hopefully this coming year will be
a better one than at least parts of the past one were, although as I sit
and watch the early rounds of the celebrations around the world I can't
help but be in awe of what the people of this world are capable of, not
just in terms of the magnitude of the celebrations but also in terms of
the human spirit and its ability to rise up in the face of unimaginable
calamity.  I am SO proud to be an American and (a citizen of our
precarious world) tonight...
